  3. Thank you for all your hard work in making Tour de Troit 2012 another wonderful adventure. I’m very disappointed that our local newspaper couldn’t find room to celebrate this event, and instead buried the article on page 17 next to the obituaries. Still, it was a fabulous success, and after participating for three years now, am looking forward to doing it again next year. Hopefully, our local media will give the Tour, and the dedicated organizers like yourselves, the respect you deserve.
    Thanks!

  4. Century ride group has head on collision with 5000 leisurely riders! What happened?

  5. A few more scrapes along the route, I think a few flags on a few more barrels mite help. Riders had a hard time avoiding sudden holes and route markers. Detroit police officers !!! You rock !!! Great job thanxxxx ESP the last leg inbound to the train station… See you next year

  6. Best one so far. Having a closed route was great. Detroit’s finest did a great job of controlling traffic. Only drawback continues to be the knuckleheads who thik this is a race and zig zag like maniacs through the crowd.

  10. @Peter, This was our first year with a closed course and our time estimates were off. We have learned and will make adjustments for next year.

  12. An amazing day of biking in Detroit. Local media missed the boat! When was the last time 5,000+ bikes could be found in Detroit at the same time? A photo of bikes on Belle Isle from a traffic chopper would have been amazing. No photos in the local paper. Story buried on page 17. What a shame. Thanks to all the volunteers and special thanks to Detroit’s Police Force for making this a great event. Our first TDT, planning to be back next year!

  13. @ Tim, I don’t consider myself a knuckle head as I was “zipping past people”. I consider that those people were riding slower than I wanted to ride so I passed them. Same thing you do in a car. No its not race but I’m also not going to go slow either.

  14. The ride was not organized well. We got stopped several times. A group in front of us turned right instead of left and the cops didn’t stop them. We asked and then they pointed. More volunteer spotters are needed at crucial intersections. The barricades at the end weren’t ready and when we pulled into the park it was dangerous. Also, leaving belle isle we had to cross over the incoming bike traffic which was chaotic. Mostly the cops were awesome but it seemed amateurish organization at best. The sag stop is so late in the ride it doesn’t make sense. The refreshments were superb.
Suggestion: put folks in heats like the night ride in Chicago to spread out the start.
The route was different than a couple years ago and did not feature the awesome neighborhoods as in years past.
Thanks for the efforts but improvements are needed
While we were waiting to start we couldn’t hear the announcements at all.
After a long ride the band was super loud and blaring into the seating area.

  15. Kudos to the Detroit News iPad app – I came home late in the afternoon, read the Tour story and forwarded it to my sister who had come along with me.

The direction on Belle Isle wasn’t marked well and the first riders (we were in that group by happenstance) went counter-clockwise probably out of force of habit. That meant 7 more miles until the rest stop.

Other than that great ride, especially the first half where the group seemed to going about 10mph – a nice pace for a ride like this. After we were stopped for 15 – 20 minutes on E Grand Blvd the adrenaline kicked in and the pace at the front was 16 – 18 mph! Glad it slowed down again later.

Great job on the first time closed course. Be bold for next year – I can imagine 8 – 10,000 cyclists (and one blader – my goodness!) easily after everyone talks this up.

    Many thanks!

  16. @Mark, the kinks you experienced were a direct result of the first-ever closed course. Bigger and better for 2013!

By admin on Sep 19, 2012

  17. @BS, Sorry you feel this way. As a result of our first-ever closed course, there were some kinks with timing. We will be implementing a staggered start next year. Many other people enjoyed the route and the music…we all have different tastes and preferences. We aim to improve every year.

  18. Thanks for your response admin. I do understand. Growth (a good thing) often brings unforseen problems. Other than my original comments, I really enjoyed riding through the different neighborhoods of Detroit in such an organized way. Scenery was great…weather was great…police support was 2nd to none. What a great way to see the City. Already looking forward to next year. Thank you for your efforts.
