Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Bike Ride 01/21/13
January 9, 2013 – 9:10 pmDid you know that Martin Luther King, Jr. first delivered his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech in Detroit? Yup, it’s true, and the Tour de Troit has decided to host a bike ride with the hopes of honoring his legacy and the civil rights movement here that was so important nationally.
On January 21, we invite you to join TdT and Detroit City Council Member Kenneth Cockrel, Jr. in a cycling celebration of the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. This is a free ride, but registration is required. Families are encouraged.
The route is approximately 10 miles and will take in the length of the 1963 March to Freedom (https://www.reuther.wayne.edu/node/7858) and several historical sites relevant to King and other local activists that were integral to the March and and the impact of the “I Have a Dream” speech delivered at Cobo Arena afterwards.
The ride will begin and end at McGregor Memorial Conference Center on the campus of Wayne State University. Parking is available on-street and at structures PS#2 (Lodge Service Drive S. of Kirby) and PS#8 (Forest between Woodward and Cass Ave.). Regular rates will apply. Campus map can be found here.
