Early registration deadline extended to August 15th!

August 1, 2011 – 9:21 am

Same registration rate now available until August 15th!

Welcome to 2011!

July 25, 2011 – 1:58 pm

Although it’s been pretty quiet around here, be assured that preparation for this year’s Tour de Troit is well underway. We want this year to be the best ever and are working to streamline and improve every aspect of the ride, the rest stop and the after-party!

If you’ve ridden around Corktown and Southwest Detroit in the last week or so, you might have noticed spray paint that indicates where bike lanes are being added to the roadway. We are really excited about this — after all, the TdT has raised nearly $100,000 to date for this amazing infrastructure improvement project that is contributing 16.2 miles of bike lanes to Detroit’s growing network of greenways. We are committed to growing our list of sponsors to ensure that we are able to continue to financially support the Southwest Detroit Greenlink.

Lastly, before we get back to work, we’d like to point out that registration is indeed up and running. Head over to eventbrite to sign up today! We are still working with the city on routing, barricading and police presence, so we do yet not know the number of riders we will cap registration at, but it will no doubt be capped. So why take the chance? Get in on the fun today!

More press + Photo Booth

September 28, 2010 – 10:53 am

Great article from The South End:

Monica Patel and Kelly McMahon, both of Ann Arbor, had only good things to say about the Tour de Troit. This was their first time taking part in the event, and McMahon said that she was “really excited about seeing this side of Detroit.” Patel added that she would take part “for sure next year,” and that it was “really fun.”

Read the rest here.

Photographer Dave Lewinski set up a photo booth at Roosevelt Park and took hundreds of great photos of Tour de Troiters. Check them out here!

Woody Miller

September 24, 2010 – 12:41 pm

This year’s shirt features WM in a black circle on the front. This is in memory of Woody Miller, an avid cyclist that assisted in the planning of the Tour de Troit for many years.

Please read this lovely tribute to him at TheDetroiter.com.

We miss Woody and will be riding with him in spirit.

Didn’t register?

September 23, 2010 – 5:43 pm

Then sorry, you cannot “just ride along” with the Tour de Troit.

Why?

The money that people pay to ride in the tour de Troit goes towards many things, first and foremost to the Corktown-Mexicantown Greenlink, which is being built next year. This event is, above all, a fund-raiser.

Other expenses that are covered by registration fees include liability insurance, licenses, police escort, food and other refreshments, tents, tables, chairs, generator, sound system, port-a-johns.

This event is 100% volunteer-run — along with the help and support of Southwest Detroit Business Association, the non-profit fiduciary for the event and the Corktown-Mexicantown Greenlink.

Sadly, we have received a number of emails and phone calls from people that missed the registration deadline and are informing us that they are just going to show up anyways and ride. Dude, not cool.

You will not have a wristband, which means that our volunteers will not serve you food or beverages. You cannot use the port-a-johns. You cannot sit down in a chair. If  you have issues with your bike, you will not be helped. What if you crash into another rider? You are not covered under our liability insurance.

Sorry that you missed registration, but it is just like that concert you waited too long to buy tickets to. It’s sold out, and you can’t get in. Next year, we plan on growing the event again. We believe in smart, incremental growth and want to be able to keep people that paid safe and happy.

Thank you for understanding, and we hope to see you in 2011!

Some goodies to look forward to

September 23, 2010 – 12:34 pm

Some of the best things about the Tour de Troit are the little things. We are getting really excited for Saturday, and here are a few of those special tidbits that keep us that way.

  • Before the ride takes off, enjoy a scone and a cup of Great Lakes Coffee. A safe bet would be that you’ll get to enjoy their W. Vernor or Corktown blends, but we’ll have to wait and see!
  • If you have an issue with your bike, we encourage you to visit your local independent bike shop TODAY and get it taken care of. If something seems wonky when you are at Roosevelt Park, there will be tents manned by bike technicians at three corners of the park. The Hub of Detroit, American Cycle and Fitness and Wheelhouse Detroit will have pumps, stands and tools to get you on the road.
  • Both the metric century and the main ride will enjoy a rest stop at Gabriel Richard Park at the foot of Belle Isle. There will be a ton more port-a-johns than there were last year. Riders will enjoy a Vitamin Water, a Michigan apple courtesy of the Eastern Market Corp. and a nutri-bar from Whole Foods — and a lovely park.
  • Metric century riders will have an additional rest stop at the recently renovated Northwest Activities Center. Water and tasty Randy’s Granola will be there waiting for you!
  • After the ride, there will be food and drink — but you knew that. There will also be tunes provided by Rock N Roll Scientist, who regularly spins at the Garden Bowl. If you are sore, Re:new Detroit will be there providing free massages. Plus, photographer Dave Lewinski will be there with his faux photo booth. Check out his work at the Canfield St. Market for an example of the photos that he will take of you and your cycling buddies!
  • We will be selling t-shirts after the ride for $15.
  • The Tour de Troit takes being green seriously. We recycle with our friends at Recyclean and we use non-plastic-based cutlery and plates from Michigan Green Safe products for our food service. And the water we are serving to the metric centurions comes in biodegradable containers.

See ya in a few days!
